And this comes from no expert here. Just so we are clear that I am a newbie to this game. This also is not a revelation, actually common sense.

I saw an interview with one of the Hall of Fame NFL quarterbacks a few years ago, I forget which one. But he said that at one point there wasn't anything a defense could throw at him he hadn't seen, and he could react better knowing it. Why? Because he had the experience.

I spent I would say about 20 hours with two chars in the ascalon arena, about 3 hours a night over the last week. (Half the week I was able to fight without worry of leveling.) I was literally hitting the next button whenever i lost, so I was constantly fighting. But there were food and bathroom breaks too, so I estimate about 10-15 fights an hour. I had to have been in at least 150 matches so far.

Not saying this to brag. I was on the losing side way way more times then the winning one. I made my share of mistakes that cost my team the win.

What I am saying is that all the experience will make you a heck of a lot more comfortable. It allows you some time to look for other ways to deal with situations and reasons why you died, did no damage, or didn't help your team win. You really get to know what you have for skills and what they can do, their pros and cons. You get to know your build when your using it a hundred times and switching skills back and forth.

It is also good cause you get to see all kinds of attacks. Sure, they won't be as varied as later on, but it teaches you how to counter things and to be prepared to change up your attack or defense.

You can also improve your alt's performances through beating the same build. You can spot weaknesses in templates or what skills are used.

Repetition is the other huge helper. Lots of fights are a great way to nail down good habits and some basic attacks. If a situation turns bad or something unexpected happens, you have to be able to react to that. If your still working on the basics, your not long for the world.

Like I said, I am no expert pvp'er, and I'm not telling anyone anything new here. Repetition and experience need to be mentioned as some of the best learning tools, and the early arenas are a great place to work on them.

No skill trainer or mission can teach you what they can.

P.S. My two chars were Cunnito and Valentyne Odion btw if you were in the arena in the past week.

Agree 100%, analyzing what went wrong (or right) during a fight is always going to be the best way to improve your build and teams coordination.

One thing you're missing, and you'll see it when you make it to the Tombs and the Hall, is the metagame. Experience is very important, and can even save you when you make a bad metagame choice. But making good metagame choices is what seperates the good from the bad in this game.

Metagame is a sense of knowing where the game is and where it is headed, such as trends in builds and knowing/using the appropriate counters. A good example was the popularity of spike air elementalists a while back. If you were good at the metagame you would probably have saw such trends early on and reacted earlier and then accordingly fit the appropriate counters into your team build earlier (i.e. protective spirit, fertile season, etc.). It's a concept easy to understand but hard to apply. It is an aspect of most highly competitive strategy games and is really only seen at the top levels of competition. Also as it pertains to guild wars it is much less on the individual level than it is on the team-level because guild wars is very much team-oriented, so to suceed at the high end level of competition not only do you have to have a good understanding of the meta-game but also your teammates as well.

I agree, but it's hard to figure out what to do next with such a glaringly broken class (monk) in the game. When they fix overpowered heals a little I imagine this game will be way more fun. I'm not saying I want an "I Win" button, but when one class with one or two spells can basically negate everything you do with multiple skills and lots of energy... something isn't right.

Monks arent broken yep. In fact with the strategy of my guild and our build, i think they are the most useless class of our enemy.

As BlackAce said, Monks aren't overpowered. Healing is more powerful/efficient than damage, yes, but that's for the purpose of balance, otherwise the point of healing would be moot. You have to be able to negate the monk's ability to do what they do, is the key thing. For example, energy denial.

You could just not be outputting enough damage, which is possible but unlikely given your complaint, but what it's really about is shutting down the monks (plural, as 8 man teams generally have 3), and that's done by more than just damage.

You just gotta learn that monks can't be brute forced. Well they can but it's often an unefficent way of doing it.
